Actos – Treat High Levels of Blood Sugar
Type 2 diabetes and what Actos can do to manage it
Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder which is characterized by elevated levels of glucose in the blood caused by insulin resistance and somewhat reduced levels of insulin in the body. Insulin is a hormone which is necessary for the proper regulation of fat and carbohydrate metabolism in the human body. In case of an insulin resistance, its effects are compromised and cells that are present in the muscle, liver and fat tissue are unable to take up glucose from the blood, which leads to elevated levels of glucose which leads to different complications. Type 2 diabetes is usually caused by a certain lifestyle, most importantly a certain diet. Namely, a diet that is too rich in saturated fats and trans fatty acids is crucial to the development of type 2 diabetes, as is obesity, although the exact mechanisms are still debated over. It has been established, though, that overweight people are at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Therefore, changes in the diet and regular exercise are important in prevention of diabetes. However, for some people, the only way to control type 2 diabetes and to avoid further complications, such as heart attacks, amputation, strokes and kidney failure is through use of certain medications and Actos is one of the most commonly used medications in battling type 2 diabetes. Actos belongs to the thiazolidinedione class of drugs and as such it reduces the insulin resistance which is responsible for the onset of type 2 diabetes. It also has an effect on the bad cholesterol and triglycerides by reducing their levels in the body as well. In some cases, Actos is combined with insulin, sulfonylurea and metformin in treating type 2 diabetes. Actos is also used, although still experimentally in treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
Actos treatment
Your doctor will need to know as much as possible about your medical history before they can safely prescribe Actos to you. This is important as some conditions may be adversely affected by a Actos treatment, such as severe heart failure. You will also not be prescribed with Actos if you are allergic to it or to any of the ingredients that go into Actos. Other conditions that will require you to undergo additional testing include congestive heart failure, fluid retention, liver disease or history of strokes or heart attacks. While taking Actos it is important that you check the levels of sugar in your blood regularly, especially if you are travelling, if you exercise extensively, if you skip meals, drink alcohol or if you have any other illnesses. Your doctor is the only one who can make changes to your dosage and your schedule and you should never do this on your own. In all likelihood, you will also be recommended to start exercising regularly, to eat healthier and to do other things that are aimed at managing your type 2 diabetes, besides taking Actos.
