Lower your Cholesterol with Mevacor

High cholesterol and what statins can do

Cholesterol needs lipoproteins in order to be transported into the blood stream where it can do most damage. There are five different types of lipoproteins and we will cover the two main types that are responsible for the proper functioning of the cardiovascular system and problems with the same. There are the so called low density lipoproteins that are also called bad cholesterol and that carry cholesterol from the liver to other cells in the body. The problem arises when cholesterol gets into blood stream, or in fact, when too much cholesterol gets in the blood stream. Once there, cholesterol can get accumulated on the inner walls of blood vessels and narrow the space through which the blood flows. This is called artherosclerosis and it can lead to serious cardiovascular diseases and episodes that can even be lethal. If artherosclerosis is not treated and if it gets really severe, stenosis of the arteries happens, which is an extreme narrowing of the blood vessels. Such narrowing can lead to such cardiovascular events like strokes, heart attacks, aneurysms and others. Furthermore, high blood cholesterol can lead to the plaques on the wall of the vessels which can break off and cause thrombs which are also potentially lethal and can lead to different conditions.
On the other hand, there are the high density lipoproteins, or good cholesterol, which collect the cholesterol from the body and take it back to liver. By doing so, they do the opposite of LDL and they contribute to normal functioning of the cardiovascular system.
This is where statins come in. They are drugs whose main purpose is to decrease the levels of LDL and increase the levels of HDL. Mevacor is in fact the first statin ever developed and approved for use in people with artherosclerosis. It is developed from naturally-occurring compounds found in oyster mushrooms and red yeast rice. Besides acting on different types of lipoproteins, Mevacor also reduces levels of triglycerides that also contribute to artherosclerosis and different cardiovascular diseases.

Because of all of this, Mevacor is one of the most commonly used medications when it is needed to reduce the levels of cholesterol in the blood and prevent or reduce risk of different cardiovascular diseases.
