Fosamax and its efficacy against bone disorders

Fosamax is a medication from the bisphosphonate group of drugs and as such, it is used primarily in treating medical conditions that affect the bones, such as osteoporosis and Paget’s disease.

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones which causes certain changes in the bones, making them more prone to fracture. There are several types of osteoporosis, such as menopausal, senile and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis which is caused by use of steroids. There are different contributors to the development of osteoporosis and we will try to cover the most important ones, which also can be prevented by lifestyle changes.

For example, immoderate consumption of alcohol, especially in the early age increases the risk of osteoporosis significantly. Vitamin D deficiency is also a major contributor to osteoporosis as it reduces the bone density. Tobacco smoking is also one of the contributors, due to its effect on the osteoblasts and their activity. Malnutrition is also a significant cause, as it leads to compromised state of the bones. Lack of exercise, heavy metals, soft drinks and high protein diet are also major contributors to osteoporosis that can be avoided by making certain lifestyle changes. However, there are certain causes of osteoporosis such as different medical conditions and risks that are natural which cannot be avoided and that also contribute to the risk of contracting osteoporosis. Fosamax works by altering the cycle of the formation of bone tissue, increasing bone mass and slowing down the loss of bone tissue.

This is crucial in treatment of osteoporosis, as it prevents fractures which are the most dangerous and common results of osteoporosis, as they can lead to other complications, some of which can even be lethal.

Another use for v is in treatment of Paget’s disease, which is a condition that causes the bones to become enlarged and deformed. It is caused mainly by viral infections and it can lead to different medical conditions, some of which can turn out to be life-threatening.

Taking Fosamax to improve the state of the bones

There are certain conditions that will prevent you from taking Fosamax altogether. These conditions include hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the blood), allergies to Fosamax or any problems with the movement of muscles in the esophagus. Some other conditions that might be affected by Fosamax include troubles swallowing, vitamin D deficiency, dental problems, kidney disease, ulcers and other problems in the esophagus or stomach. Once your Fosamax treatment commences, you will need to adhere to the prescribed regimen that your doctor has come up with in order to benefit your health the most. One very important thing to keep in mind is that you need to either sit upright or stand for half an hour after you have ingested Fosamax, as otherwise you might experience serious problems in esophagus and stomach.  Also, do not eat or drink anything but water around the time you take Fosamax. You will most likely be told to come for bone mineral density tests so that your doctor can monitor your progress. Furthermore, you might also be told to exercise regularly and to change your diet to complement your Fosamax treatment.
