What can Parlodel be used for?

Parlodel belongs to the group of medications called dopamine agonists, which means it increases the levels of dopamine in the body. Because of this, and because of some of its other properties, Parlodel is a medication that is used for a whole array of different medical conditions. It is most commonly used in cases of hyperprolactinaemia, which includes levels of a hormone prolactin which are much higher than the normal ones. This hormone is associated with lactation, but also affects a whole number of different processes in the body. The symptoms of this disorder in females include abnormal menstruations, or even a lack of menstruations, production of milk even if the woman is not pregnant or nursing, as well as infertility. In men, it mostly causes reduction in sex drive, erectile dysfunction, as well as gynecomastia. It is mostly caused by pituitary gland tumor, which is also responsible for some of the other conditions that can be treated with Parlodel.

For example, acromegaly, or abnormal growth is also attributed to pituitary gland tumor and can also be treated with Parlodel. In 2009, the FDA approved Parlodel for use in treatment of type 2 diabetes, as it has been shown that this drug lowers the levels of sugar in the blood. Parkinson’s disease is another condition that can be treated with Parlodel, as it appears in cases where the levels of dopamine are imbalanced in the patient. Another common use for Parlodel is in treating neuroleptic malignant syndrome. When you take all of this into consideration, Parlodel is a medication that is very useful in a number of cases and it is one of the most versatile medications on the market.

Parlodel treatment – what to keep in mind

The most important thing to keep in mind when taking Parlodel is that you need to do exactly as your doctor has prescribed, as any changes in the dosage or the regimen in general can only lead to adverse effects to your health. Your doctor is the only one who can make such changes if they decide that it would be beneficial for your health. You need to inform your doctor about any medical conditions that might be ailing you, especially if they include genetic enzyme problems and insufficiencies, blood pressure problems, breathing problems, gastrointestinal bleeding, heart problems, kidney or liver diseases, or if you have recently been pregnant. Keep in mind also that some people have experienced drowsiness and dizziness when ingesting Parlodel. If this happens to you, steer clear of any activities that require you to be fully alert and responsive until the drowsiness and/or dizziness has disappeared. In case you are pregnant and using this medication, make sure that you check your blood pressure regularly as it can cause elevated blood pressure in pregnant women. If you are taking Parlodel for issues with your menstruations, make sure that you also come for regular appointments with your doctor who will see if your Parlodel treatment is going as well as it was supposed to.
