NSAIDs and their use in treating inflammatory diseases

Inflammation is the natural response of the human body to certain harmful stimuli, like for example pathogens (viruses, bacteria), irritants or damaged cells. Although it is in fact our body’s response which is aimed at making things better, inflammation is often one of the most severe symptoms of different conditions and can also be a cause for these conditions. The severity of the inflammations and inflammatory diseases varies from minor to very severe, from mere sores to conditions such as arthritis or even types of tumors in certain cases. This is the reason why it is important that we have different types of medications that are aimed at treating inflammations. One of the most common types of drugs prescribed in cases of inflammatory diseases are NSAIDs. This stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and as you can see, these drugs are aimed at relieving the pain and the inflammation associated with certain conditions. The non-steroidal part in their name suggests that they are completely different in the way they work from steroids which are also often used in treating inflammations. Another very important property of NSAIDs is that these drugs are also analgesics, meaning that they relieve the pain. They are one of the very rare drugs used for relieving pain that are not opiates which have many side effects and disadvantages. Every one of us has most probably taken a NSAID once in their life; as such popular over-the-counter drugs like Aspirin and Ibuprofen are in fact NSAIDs.

Relafen is a NSAID, and like all other NSAIDs, it has certain effects on prostaglandins, lipid compounds which are responsible for strong and important physiological effects. They are often mistaken for hormones, but as they are not produced in a specific organ, they are not precisely hormones. One of their most important roles is in inflammations. Relafen has an effect on the levels of prostaglandins and their functioning and as such reduces inflammation. The most common use for Relafen is in the treatment of arthritis. Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that has many types some of which are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and many others. Voltaren belongs to the class of medications known as NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Some of the most famous medications belong to this group, such as ibuprofen and even more famous Aspirin. These medications are used for two of their main properties. First of all, they reduce the levels of prostaglandins and thus alleviate inflammations and they also relieve pain. They are completely different in the mechanism in which they work from steroids, another type of drugs that is also used for inflammatory diseases. It also needs to be noted that NSAIDs are rare as they relieve pain and they are not opiates, making them ideal for certain purposes where opiates are contraindicated.

Voltaren is different from all (or at least most) other NSAIDs in that it holds some other properties which make this medication even more efficient in treating inflammations and relieving pain. Besides reducing the levels of prostaglandin, it blocks voltage-dependent sodium channels and acid0sensing ion channels which helps in the relief of pain. Due to the incredible efficacy of Voltaren both in treating inflammations and relieving pain, it is one of the most versatile medications on the market and it is used in a wide array of cases.

For one, Voltaren is used in inflammatory conditions that affect the muscoskeletal system, such as arthritis, dermatomyositis, dental pain, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, TMJ, polymyositis, spondylarthritis and gout attacks. It is also used in managing pain in cases of gallstones and kidney stones. Voltaren can also be used in treating acute migraines by relieving pain. Voltaren is also commonly used for treating post-operative and post-traumatic pain, particularly in cases where inflammation is also present. Voltaren can be bought over the counter in some countries, although in small doses and it is then used for treating inflammations that characterize some simple and common conditions.

This is not all. There are other, off-label uses for Voltaren which have become common practice. For instance, in patients suffering from cancer who also experience pains due to their condition, Voltaren is used, particularly effective in cases where inflammation is also present. In such cases, Voltaren is usually combined with opiates such as codeine. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is also known to respond to a Voltaren treatment. However, it has to be noted that there are also some disadvantages to Voltaren, which are also present in all other NSAIDs. Namely, it has been shown that NSAIDs can adversely affect the cardiovascular system and this is the reason why they should be used with care by people with compromised cardiovascular system.
